The story that the holes are made by putting a grain of rice on the piece before firing is a nice tourist story but not true! In reality, this type of china is made by piercing the mostly dried piece of pottery before being fired for the first time. A pattern is then painted on the piece. After the pattern is applied, each piece is dipped into a clear glaze over and over to fill the tiny holes. The final outcome is a beautiful piece of Chinese Porcelain with translucent “rice like” windows that the light actually shines through when you hold it to the light.
